PAL SNES n00b / Mod Questions / General info?

    Hey everyone.

I'm considering getting a SNES but no way in hell am I putting up with those borders. So, can anyone give me info on a PAL SNES mod? What's the usual price? Are there any different hardware versions I should look out for? What about US games? I'm totally new for this so any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Why not pick a super famicom instead, on ebay they go for ?20 - 30 unboxed, i got my second one for ?40 with 14 games, pal to ntsc converters go for around ?5-10

I know its not the answer to your question but it might be worth considering.

Buy a US SNES. Easy to play Japanese games (remove the tabs inside the slot if they aren't already done), easy to use RGB from it, no worries...

The only thing putting me off the US version is the way it looks...and of course the fact that I'd like to play a lot of friends' PAL games...

Okay so it looks like a breeze block. And the purple colour scheme ain't great. But it's the best version of the machine to own

Is it really the best version though? Considering I'll be playing mostly PAL games ...

How easy is each version to get running RGB also?

In terms of NTSC games the US SNES is the best, but for PAL games you'll still need a converter. My famicom scart lead has been modded for UK tv's and works fine through RGB

Don't forget that you'll also need your SNES to be switched for 50/60Hz if you're interested in playing PAL games - many PAL games check to see if the machine is running at 50Hz, and will display an error message if it isn't. The way round this is to boot up in 50Hz, then wait for the game to pass the check (e.g. wait for the title screen or for the game to start), and then flick it to 60Hz.

I have heard that there's a converter which can get around this, but all the converters which I've seen require the machine to have a 50/60Hz switch.

All versions of SNES can output RGB as standard with the exception of the SNES Jr machines (which output only composite video) - however they can be modded for RGB quite easily, although they CAN'T be modded for 50/60Hz yet.
