    Halo 3 frustration :(

Hi People, I am looking for an explaination on something.

When I play Halo 3 online against Uk/European/Some Americans I can kill them quite easily/fairly (assuming they are not skill level 40 or something). Shotgun to the head dead, half a clip of machine gun + gun butt dead. 3 lots of battle rifle burst to the head, dead!

What I do not understand is why some people seem to take a lot more damage before they die?? It p*sses me off when I shot gun them, melee them then they melee me back and I die???????? I brute shot someone a full clip and they live yet they hit me 3 times and I'm dead!?!?!?

This is my first experince of online gaming. Does this experince carry to other online games? I have a Belkin router with a NAT firewall but I have placed my 360 outside of the NAT. I have a 10 meter ethernet cable connecting my router to my 360. I am convinced some players are a fraction of a second ahead of whats happening on my screen. One of my team killed a guy and said he was dead, he was still alive for 1 more second on my screen?

I guess I am asking if there is anyway I can optimise my router so its as fast as possible.

Edit: I am using Tiscali and have a 2 meg connection

Halo isn't really the best introduction to online gaming to be honest. Have you tried a few matches with friends?

What I mean is, Halo players are eejits. That's where friends lists come in. Perhaps a few games with people from here would be a kinder introduction.

Yeah, it seems that when I play UK based people all is fair. It just when I play people across the pond some of them seem to take a hell of a lot more damage then others.

      Maybe I am just.............sh*t.........sometimes.... ha

I'll look up the Halo 3 thread and see if anyones up for a tussle

Give Rainbow Six Vegas a try too, it's a little slower paced, and has a great lobby system where you can have lovely chats and pisstaking sessions between rounds. Add me up if you like.

You are not the only one, sometimes I shoot rounds of the battle rifle into someone and my health is still good. I go in for a melee kill and press the button just in time to see my corpse fly across the room because they have hit the button as well and for them to survive. And I am left thinking WTF they should have dropped.

Happens to everyone sometimes, that's the nature of online gaming. Your hits obviously aren't registering due to lag, there's nothing you can do but get over it.

I got over it and now use it as an excuse for being rubbish at games.

You often feel that alot, this is more often because you are playing someone in the states and there is a small period of delay for information to get to them and back to you.

When you are on the matchmaking screen you can search for best connection and hopefully match you up with someone else in the UK.

As a veteran Halo player I can fully understand the frustration, it will get a little better as you improve though.

I concur with Mr Boris. Latency can be a pain. Still, "Prefer Good Connections" as it helps.

It isn't Halo's fault though -it happens in all games. In fact, compared to a lot of games, Halo 3 is actually really good at masking the effects of latency. Translation: if you were playing the same people on most other games it wouldn't just be a bit random -it would be a totally unplayable stuttery mess.

Check the "Are you a good Live host thread" in the online forum for help to improve your connection.

Many thanks for the replies. *thumb up*

From now on I'll always use 'good connection' and I will check the 'good host' thread.

Swallow, its easier to get over it after knowing my hits aren't registering.

Online FPS have suffered with things like this for years on PC. You get one of two kinds of compensation for lag, either..

                            1) Extrapolation. Your copy of the game sees where the enemy is (location provided by the server), what direction he's running in and what the lag is like, and displays them where it thinks they should be. If you see people suddenly jerking between places in an online game it's often this. Although you're shooting where you think they are, and your client is showing the shots hitting, they may not actually be landing as far as the server machine is concerned.

                            2) Lagged Kills. Counter-Strike used to be set up like this (and may still be for all I know). The server shows the players where they actually are, but obviously this is lagged. So you're shooting a guy in a position he was in, but as far as your machine can see that's where he still is. In this case if you hit them, it notifies the server and awards the hit belatedly. Anyone playing CS a few years ago will remember being killed after they went round a corner and screaming 'bull****, hax!!!'.

Some games offer neither compensation, and all you can do is 'lead' the shot, so if someone's running across your screen from left to right you need to aim ahead of them to allow for the lagged shots to register.

Any kind of lag is far more noticeable in scanhit weapons (i.e. nothing moves when you fire, the game looks to see if there's anything under your crosshair, the hit is instantaneous) than in projectile weapons (rockets, plasma, whatever, visible shots essentially). PC games were handy in as much as they allowed you to alter the effects of extrapolation etc.

                            blah blah blah

Cheers Babs, thats interesting. What you have said explains a lot.

Reading the 'are you a good host' thread it seems upload speed might also be a factor? Take my upload speed for example which is 257kps. This is the speed in which my Halo info is sent from my router--->ISP---->Halo 3 right?

If I am playing someone with a 1.2meg upload speed am I not at a disadvantage because their 'damage' information is being sent quicker then mine?

If me, the 258kps and the 1.2 meg uploader started shooter each other in the head at the exact same time with an assult rifle would he/she not be the better off?

I am changing ISP anyway now. O2 ?7.50 a month up to 8 meg unlimited with up to 1.3 meg upload (for O2 mobile contract customers). I am going to get a better router and then if I still die then yes, I will conside that I am sh*t at Halo 3!

Oh, changing all this is not just for Halo 3 btw, it is to optimise my online gaming for future live games too. Incase anyone was thinking I was being too drastic.

                              <~~~~~~~ *hates loosing*
