DVD/AVI/etc to Apple ipod touch converter?

Right I've got my new touch and I'd like some movies and shows to put on it.

What are the current best converters to do this? I prefer quality over time to convert but the quicker the better.

    Any advice appreciated.

Are you running a PC or a Mac?

Handbrake is fantastic on the Mac for ripping DVDs to .mp4 for the iPod. It's also available on the PC but it's not as nice to use in my opinion.

iSquint is also decent on the Mac, allowing you to convert most of the popular formats to iPod compatible files.

ffmpegx is worth a look as well even though it hasn't been updated for a while. Handbrake cannot rip all DVDs but is pretty quick even with two pass encoding.

PSP Video 9, for DVDs just use DVDShrink to rip the files before encoding them.

Try xvid4psp, it supports the iPod. You can use 1 pass quality or turbo at high bit rate...

'AnyDVD' (software layer on DVD drive to remove all DVD protections - constantly updated) combined with 'CloneDVDmobile' (one touch re-encoding) is exactly what you need, but it's not free (infact it's about forty quid if i remember).
I mucked around with freeware for a while, but this simply gets my dvds onto my ipod / pmp without any hassle.
