Can anyone suggest where I can pick up a cheap av cable? Its just to test whether my 360 is borked or whether its just the cable (unlikely I know!).

You could phone MS and ask them to replace the cable if it's still in warranty. They'll send you another cable without you having to prove anything. They did this for me when I was having interference problems (didn't fix it, incidentally).
If yours is out of warranty and you haven't registered the console with them before, you could just make up a date twelve months from now. Obviously, that would be deeply morally wrong.
