Sony Bravia W Series + AV Receiver HELP!

Hi, I really am not sure if what I want to do is even possible...

I have a new 46in Bravia W series and I have wall mounted it. This places it about 3 metres from where my kit is going to reside. By kit I mean: Xbox 360, PS3, HD cable box (Teleworst/Virgin), DVD player and a lowly old VCR.

What I was desperately hoping to avoid was having to run a multitude of cables up to the TV. At present that list would consist of: VGA for the 360, HDMI for the PS3, HDMI for the cable box, SCART or component for the DVD player and a SCART for the old VCR...

For some reason I got it into my head I could just buy an AV Receiver and plug all these items into that, then only run ONE HDMI cable up to the TV...

Am I living in cloud cookoo land??!

    Any help appreciated

    Russ

I think the only way you will get away with having ONE HDMI cable leading up to your TV is if all your inputs use HDMI as well?

      Well, it's do-able.

You'd need an AV receiver with 3 HDMI inputs at least and 1 output.

Change your X360 output to HDMI dumping the VGA. You could keep VGA but you'd have to have 2 cables up to the TV.
Your PS3 would pass thru its HDMI
Youur cable box would pass thru its HDMI

Your DVD player would output component and be converted to HDMI.

Your VCR would have to be converted from Scart to Component with a QED switch and your audio handled by redwhite phono leads.

      Job done.

      What's your budget?

I have a Yamaha RXV-2700 and it does all of the above. They can probably be picked up for about 900 quid now.

        Thanks for the reply!

I was actually hoping to get this sorted for £400 or less...I was looking at this:

The Samsung AVR720, but it only has 2 HDMI inputs...could I get away with component out on the 360? I have the component out cables already and run a Panny projector from it at 720p (it's an old one that only does 720p).

Incidentally, I'd still like to have the Panny projector as an optional output from the AV receiver, the LCD TV being the other. I'd connect the projector via component because it doesn't have HDMI. I guess this is also possible with an AV receiver?

        thanks

Using component out on the Xbox would certainly allow you to do what you want.

You might not be able to turn HDMI inputs into Component output tho. In fact I doubt it very much. Be careful on that one.

Also Samsung probably won't be great on sound quality....

          The Onkyo is good: https://www.hificonfidential.co.uk/d...sp/sku=TXSR605

To get a 3rd HDMI input really does cost a lot more!

            Thanks for the help.

I guess you are saying I will only really be able to use the projector to watch signals that have been fed into the AV receiver via component, seeing as it only accepts component?

In all honesty I only ever use the projector to watch the DVD player (via component in order to get progressive scan) and the Xbox 360, also via component. As both of these would be fed IN to the AV receiver as component that should be okay I guess.

Are you saying then that the AV receiver would be okay with converting component to HDMI but not the other way round? So the idea of feeding the 360 into the AV receiver by component and out to the LCD TV via HDMI would still work? I guess I'd only get 720p or 1080i from the 360 anyway.

Thanks again for your help...I really am feeling I'm in a bit of cable-hell at the moment!

Yess Russ, all your points are correct. I would definitely advise a demo to check this is the case though. I'm sure a shop can connect a dvd player over component so that you can test that it can display via HDMI *and* component.
