The softness is probably caused by the internal upscaling from native 720p to 1080p, in which case, it'll look the same whatever connection you use.

But the dash does look quite soft anyway for some reason.

ahh, thanks for the response...I'll dig out Bioshock or Gears of War and take them for a spin and see what they look like. I am just surprised the dash looked a little soft, especially compared to the PS3 which has the sort of sharpness that'd cut your eyeballs!

try the demo of virtua fighter 5 or Virtua Tennis. iirc they display in native 1080P

720p games shouldn't look soft through this setup. Mine look great over HDMI but that of course won't be possible on the older X360s. I've never used the 360 VGA cable but have heard all sorts of things about it.

Oh true, just saying the dash isn't a good indicator how how sharp the picture is, it's bizarrely soft on the text and stuff even at 720p native. I've no experience of the 360 in 1080p though.

W series does 1080p via component also

really? because that would make it unique in the UK to my knowledge, even my SXRD with the Bravia Pro engine doesn't.

VF5 doesn't run at native 1080p, it runs at 1024*1024.

No they don't - well, not the W2000s. All of the "2000" models take 1080p over HDMI only (or VGA if you rub it the right way).

Having see SkyHD back to back with Virgin+ and Sky is much better in HD but not as good in SD.

Way more artefacts from the virgin box but then it is using MPEG2 chipset with not enough bandwidth given to match the MPEG4 from Sky. I am pretty sure BBC HD has been on reduced bandwidth on both for a while now and this will have a greater impact on the Virgin box than Sky.

I thought he had the w3000 at that price of £1700 for one as the 46" models are going for aorund £1500-£1700 (2k series dropped right down to £1200 now). I know 2k series was VGA unsuported 1080p and no component 1080p but 3000 does componenet at 1080p

Is Component 1080p becoming more common now?

Yeah, I think it's basically standard.
