Streaming media from PC to PS3

There seems to be plenty of threads about streaming media to the 360, but nothing on here (that I can find) with regards to streaming media from a PC/laptop to a PS3. Having searched on t'interweb, it would appear that the best program to use would be TVersity.

So I was just wondering if anyone could confirm whether that program is a decent one to use, or if I should really be using something else. Any other hints or tips on how to get this up and running would be appreciated, thanks.

The PS3 will be getting DivX/XviD support any time now, so you might not need it, depending on what files you have.

TVersity is a doddle to setup and I've not had any trouble streaming supported media across to the PS3. I personally haven't tried to use its transcoding, but I know it's very highly regarded.

There's some good information on various methods here (Streaming) and here (Manually transcoding and transferring to the PS3 - PSP style).

Ok thanks, that's good to know, although I'll just be using it for photos and music in the first instance.

One other thing (Columbo style!) - will TVersity allow the PS3 to playback stuff downloaded from itunes - I get the impression it'll allow the PS3 to play anything, but I just wanted to check?

Hmm, now that I'm not sure of because of the potential DRM issues. There is a feature of TVersity that allows it to stream various types of media like an internet radio station, but again I've not used that either.

I use TVersity, highly recommended. Got it up and running on my PS3 in no time, then tried it with my ipod touch and it worked just as well. Nifty software. Be sure to get the latest version though as 2.0 firmware broke it! TVersity released an updated version though.

I know what you mean, it's basically the reason I'm still buying everything on CD despite not having room for them. I like to be able to do what I want* with MY media. >_<

                * - short of distributing them freely, natch!

I can't seem to tell my vista laptop to allow media sharing - the option is always faded i.e. I can see it but can't change the setting (it's currently off grrrrr!) - any ideas?

You need to make sure you're logged in as an admin (or just turn that damn UAC rubbish off!)

Also, the network you're connected to needs to be Private. Sometimes it thinks your network is public (if its wireless i think?). You can go into network settings and change it to a Private network and this should let you enable the media sharing.

It didn't work well at all for us, though that is probably to do with the fact the laptop isn't of a particularly high spec.

The main reason was to stream movie files taken with our digicam but it wouldn't transcode these at all.

I uninstalled it and now just use Windows Media Player for streaming even though it's very limited.

You are a class act Chris - thank you so much! It was that private/public nonsense causing the problem. Now just one more thing (I think!), but how do I tell it to use TVersity instead of Windows Media to stream from?

EDIT: Just using Windows media for now and that's fine! It'll never play my itunes stuff anyway so it doesn't matter!!

                        Thanks for your help dudes!

All depends on the format, obviously, but yeah it shouldn't be a problem.

Any Linux solutions ? I'd love a transcoder that worked off my webserver so I wouldn't have to mess around with a middleman application on a windows box?
