Thinking of buying a JPN PS2 in Japan

Hello again folks! It's the ever inquisitive me. Anyway, to get to the point, I'm in Japan and contemplating buying a JAP PS2 just in case my flatmate's packs in when we get back home. I would to know please if:

I can use it when I get back home?
If not, can I use the stepdown that supports my JAP DC? (I think it says PS2 on there as well but I can't rightly remember)
What games do people recommend picking up as I'm gonna visit Akiba in Tokyo this weekend and Den Den town in Osaka on the last day of the trip as well.

If someone could answer these questions and offer any extra advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, as always.

Dozens and dozens of games, what particular genres do you like? I'd say Rez and any decent shooters - Shikigami no Shiro, ESPgaluda, R-Type Final etc. Katamari series if you've never played it.

PS2 is multi voltage/frequency. Just cut the plug off and connect a UK one.

Just to make it clear - only the new style PS2's (slimline) are multivoltage.

Well, I intend to get one of those newest model ones anyway (the proper baby-size ones y'know?) so that shouldn't be a problem tbh.

In terms of games, fighters certainly are my main bag, then probably action and rpgs after and just about any other genre tbh.

An example of what I got so far:

Breath of Fireragon Quarter - 2.00 (NEW)
          Bujingai - 1.50
          Chaos War - 10.00
          Rogue Galaxy - 2.00
          Gekka no Kenshi - 6.00
Fighting For One Piece - 9.00

Do bear in mind that Japan used = better than any 2nd game you've had from Gamestation and you can understand the bargains I'm picking up here. It really does take the piss out of England so much! (sorry!)

Anyway, keep on throwing the suggestions in. I might check the power supply when I get home and if it says it'll work on a certain voltage then I'll check that with the PS2 and figure it out from there. Cheers for the input up until now.

Thats incorrect, The latest jap slimlines ie SCPH-9000x ARE NOT multivoltage.
They have the PSU built actually inside the unit and are 110v only

That's handy to know, are the new consoles any better? Faster, quieter etc?

Hello again.I think I might buy one if I have enough money left on the last day (hard to believe, I know) Anyway, what I want to know is do I need a stepdown for a new slim-slimline PS2 and if my one at home that works on my DC says it works on a PS2 will it be okay on this new model as well? I guess I can check the voltage of the machine and then check the voltage of the stepdown to see what it converts the voltage to for the English power supply. Any heads up about this from people with the knowledge would be much appreciated though.

Laters! Tokyo and Kamakura are great! My legs are tired!

                  Sorry 'bout the confusion Paddy

Hadn't realised Sony had released a revised slimline with an internal PSU....

jeimuzu - is this a Japan only thing at the mo'?

Yeh its a JAP only thing at the moment but rumour has it they'l appear over in the US and UK at some point in the near future.

As for stepdown etc I can't say as i've not had my hands on one yet, but judging from the slimlines I really doubt it'l need much.

To be honest the SCPH 7700X's are still around and i'd prefer one of those over the new model, The 7700x is easily the most reliable slimline and you won't need a stepdown for it either.....the new ones we're not sure of yet.

Well, tomorrow`s my last day in Japan and I still have plenty of money left (urp!) so maybe I should just buy a Jap PS2 and see where the winds take me with it (heh heh.)

Anyone that has a new model PS2 that has been able to use it ok let me know what your experiences have been with it.Cheers.

                      From Kabuki-cho to you!

Well, I didn't buy a PS2 after all as I wash rushed offo fo my feet the last couple of days (plus I met up with a really sweet girl I hadn't seen for 3 years so I think that was worth more tbh.)

I can always order one online if it comes to it. It'll probably just hurt if the price is above ?70.00 though but oh well, there's always next Spring/Summertime to make up for that!

                          I got a SCPH-90000CW today and I plugged it into 240V
It's working fine so far (been on for an hour). The sticker on the underside of the machine says 100V which is clearly a lie like with JPN PS3s

Geezer, thats pretty damn good news! Noticed your thread over on J-GAF first and thought I recognised ya!

Thats pretty damn good news, especially seeing as elsewhere has reported it 110v only (stamped on internal psu apparently).

What i'd like to know now is if the Magic Switch Keys work too!

Why not get a japanese PS3 instead so you can play all Japanese PS1, PS2 and PS3 (and western PS3) games
