Criterion US dvds on pal PS3

I've just got a PS3 and used Clonedvd2 to remove the region protection and burn some films like Rashomon to play upscaled on the PS3 but the films are to big for dvd-rw and I had to lower the quality to fit them on the disc.If I use dual layer dvd r will they play ok on the PS3?Also can anyone help me understand PS3 Video 9?When you convert a file and save it on the PS3 hdd will you lose the upscaled picture option? Sorry about all the questions but I'll like to store the kids dvds on the hdd for ease of use. Thanks

You should be able to find some program to rip the DVD straight to MPEG2 without any conversion or loss, then the PS3 should be able to play that quite happily.

Um, aren't all Criterion titles R0? They should play on PS3 fine without having to remove region coding.

I wouldn't count on PS3 being able to play back DL DVD-Rs well (I haven't tried +Rs on any of my players) - they have infamous playback problems on standalone players (and are horribly expensive media, especially -R, to just waste as coasters).

If you want the dvds that are to big for a dvd-rw to fit on one. Just use DVDshrink. It'll downsize them without any/much loss, with the right settings.

For files to put on the PS3 hdd. Just decrypt the disc on to the computer, in a temp folder (using dvd-decrypter or other). Then use xvid4psp to convert the vobs to mp4 (or mpg2) for the PS3...

That's a shame. A lot of their stuff is (or was) coded region 0.

I've been thinking about putting some of my DVDs on my PS3 too. Is there no software available which simply rips them directly into a format which doesn't lose quality that the PS3 can read from the hdd?

Would it be better to wait for the DivX update that's on it's way?

The PS3 will play back MPEG2 (the file format that DVDs are constructed from)

                Try this
                download smart ripper
Free & Fast Downloads for SmartRipper 2.41: download the latest versions of SmartRipper

Start it all up, under settings set file splitting to VOB-ID

Press start to rip the DVD to Your HDD.

You'll end up with a bunch of files, you want to find the largest one (it'll be a couple of gigs at least) and rename that from a .VOB to a .MPG

This will give you an unaltered DVD format file that *hopefully* the PS3 will play.

Cheers, I'll give that a try now.

Should I be able to copy it from my PC to my PS3 across my network in the way that I can with pics or is it just a matter of streaming it?

                    Either I'd of thought.

Only takes 15 minutes to rip to your HDD which is handy
