One of my mates has come to me with a problem. He hasn't played his 360 for ages, and unbeknownst to him, his XBL account expired 4 months ago. When MS tried to collect the years subscription from his credit card, it had expired, and after 2 months of trying, they cancelled his account. Fair enough to this point. However, he bought Guitar Hero 3 recently, and logged into his account on Xbox.com and bought some XBL Points so he could get the DLC. Got home, couldn't log into Live. Phoned MS, apparently they've cancelled the account, and no way to get it back. Also they don't know how he can retrieve all his saved games for this account either, so if he wants to go online with a game, he has to unlock everything again. That's before even mentioned his gamerscore has gone back to Zero. Has anyone had any experience of this of similar before ? Anything that can be done ? Seems very odd that the account is cancelled, fair enough suspend it but surely leave it so it can be reactivated ?
Here are his emails in case i've missed anything:
"I had a massive argument with Microsoft a couple of weekends ago. I
originally set up my gamer tag with a free gold subscription with a
game, then I topped it up for a year with my credit card, which ran out
4 months ago apparently. They tried to take another year from my credit
card but it had expired. So what they do is permanently suspend your
account!!!!!!! So my gamer tag still exists, but I cant use it
or reactivate the account. So if I want to go online I have to create a
new gamer tag, which means having to unlock everything again on a new
tag. I am not happy and the customer support people for xbox live done
even know how save games are linked to gamer tags."
"Basically I have not had the xbox connected to the net for a while. Microsoft tried to bill my card again, but because it was an old card it had expired and so they couldn't collect any money. I think they said my account ran out 4 months ago. Their comment was that because the account was not put on hold by me and they tried to collect another years subscription that they have cancelled the account and there is nothing that can be done. The thing I find difficult to understand is that I can still log into my profile on xbox.com. Their 'official' line was as soon as an account has not been paid up for 2 months it gets 'cancelled'.
I got really quite irritated and spoke to 3 different people on the so called help line. I think that the thing that irritated me the most was that in the morning I got Guitar Hero 3, I went onto xbox.com, logged into my account, got no error messages, brought 500 miscorsoft point (?4.95) so that I could download the foo's add on pack. I then hooked up the 360 and couldn't log onto live. So I have these 500 points that I cant use. It does seem to be a strange business model, why do they care if the account subscription is constant. Some mmorpg's keep accounts for up to 2 years after the subscription expires so that people can come back.
I guess the golden rule is once you have started your xbox live account, never stop paying it."
Help please
