    360s: Still noisy??

My old launch machine died, so I've recently bought an Elite ( FDOU 742 )

Good: It's very cold, never gets hot, no hot air blowing out, even after 8hours gaming.

Bad: When I play games, it's like a hairdryer comes on.

I thought MS had sorted the noise issue?

Wait, after 8 hours of gaming no hot air pours out? Not sure i like that idea, what would i use to keep my feet toasty warm in the winter?

Well my newer machine is certainly quiet-ER than my original

          Do trolls really exist ....

Seriously, I bought an Elite 360 a week ago, and in that time I've been saddened by the noise level when it's playing games.

I've just found out that my drive is an Hitachi. I was expecting a BenQ, or maybe a Samsung.

My original 360 had the Hitachi drive, and ran exacly as noisy as my new Elite. You would have thought that Hitachi would have refined the drive over 2years.

Why did you call me a troll? .... I love the 360. Since my last one died just over a month ago, I've been really bored. Since getting the machine again, I like it even more. PGR4, COD4, are both rocking my world.

Look through my posts over the past 6months. When people ask which console to buy, my answer is always "360"

          I have a PS3 & Wii. I'm no troll, or fanboy. Cheer-up buddy.

I don't think he meant you were trolling against the 360, so much as trying to upset owners of older consoles which overheat. As in - look at my fancy new Xbox - it's cool as the Arctic after eight hours gaming. A joke; and a pretty funny one, if you ask me!

As far as noise levels go: the Benq is supposed to be a lot quieter, but the Hitachi and Samsung are really not that far apart. The Sammy sort of whistles, whilst the Hitachi laser goes "chug.... CHUG" whilst streaming. The vast majority of noise I've heard from my 4 consoles has been the fans, though.

I said my last one died, I know what the heat and sound is like in an old 360

It really is cold after 8hours. Maybe it's because it's winter, but my heat is on, and my old 360 was always warm at the back.

I guess the noise isn't just the drive, it's also the fans.

The sound is similar to a hairdryer, not as bad though. There is some chugging noise from the drive.

I was expecting things to be significantly quieter, sadly they're not.

I'm thinking of sending it back now. Maybe all 360s still make a lot of noise though?

Three makes of drives and three makes of fans are found in the 360's. It is an absolute crapshoot as to which combination you get. New 360, or launch 360, neither can be deemed quiet or noisey by virtue of age. After the RROD issue, its one of MS' biggest failings.

You are looking for a pattern of consistancy where no such pattern exists.

                  Really?

I could spend months buying and sending 360s back and forth. Now... I don't know what to do? ... Maybe take a chance on another, and if that's noisy, just accept it.

I have an elite and it sounds like a hairdryer as well. My friends one does as well. It is quieter, just not that much quieter.

Thanks for the comments. My Elite is a bit quieter, just not as much as I had hoped for.

Oh well, it's something I'll have to accept.

                          Yep, hairdryer Elite here too.

Getting a HD drive for Xmas. Just hoping it doesn't bug me too much. Saying that, with the HD Drive doing all the work, the 360 itself should be quieter, right?

It should be the same as it is with just the dashboard running.

Mine isn't too bad running like that so it hasn't made anything unwatchable yet (providing I crank up the volume a little bit).

Whether you've got original internals or the new internals, it's still the 360 noise lottery.
