Plus there is also a digital to digital to digital conversion going on with DVI/HDMI that many people aren't aware of.

The qualifier high quality sounds weird because all it needs to do is work. If a pre-made cable of a given length showed corruption then it would be faulty and refund/replacement time.

It's completely worth paying the extra (to a point) for analogue cables like Scart, but certainly not going to get a picture quality benefit for anything digital like HDMI, optical etc.

I knew that any HDMI cable would do, but I had no idea about Optical was digital, so I guess anyone will do, not some ?30 gold plated one from Richer Sounds? I was in the market for a few, thansk guys, will just get some cheapo one.

AFAIK digital signals can still be affected by external magnetic fields. So better cables tend to have better shielding.

Even "reputable" magazines claim that expensive HDMI cables will giev you ore vivid colours and better sound. Proposturous. In the same magazine they will then review wireless media systems and say how amazing they are, by their own admission they would surely sound bad?
