    How does Xbox Live work?

Had a quick look, but can't see anything on this.

I was playing CoD4 last night. There were 12 of us in a private game. I could only hear 4 or so people talking though. I invited anephric and geov6 along but only ever catch the VERY occassional snippet of what they said (yes, in lobby). Sometimes I could hear something that sounded like talking, but VERY quiet. I wasn't hosting the game. My NAT setting is OPEN. No idea what the host's was.

    Anyway, what would cause this???????

And that leads me on to how does Xbox live work? Does all the chat go via the host or what? Is anyone able to explain or point to a website that shows how all the data gets bounced around - I'm just interested. How do MS servers fit into the equation. Why do you need a host? etc. You can probably think of more questions I should be asking

    Thanks all.

I sometimes get this problem with a friend of mine. We both know that his connection isn't great and fluctuates quite a lot and sometimes when he's talking to me it starts cutting out, almost like he flicking mute on and off really fast. It's really annoying.

The problem is, sometimes i can hear him clear as day and then he complains that i start breaking up.

It only ever happens when i chat to him so it must have some bearing on his ****e connection.
