    Wireless Router Options

    Evenin'...

Wonderin if a tech type could help with my choice of router to run a Wii & PS3 (+pc with relevant USB Adaptor)? Currently I have a 3com 54Mbps 11g which runs everything well.

However, COD4 has made me question whether I should get a quicker router as I think there is lag affecting gameplay.

I've been looking at the 108Mpbs models but happened across the 'n' type routers going up to 250Mpbs...

I've checked my line and have a throughput of 3256Kpbs...

Is it worth uprading to at least the G+ Mimo with a line this quick or is there a better option? And would there be compatibility issues with the Wii or PS3 with the 'n' type?

Any advice would be most welcome...

The speed of the router's wireless won't make any difference, unless your console is at the limit of the router's range and is receiving a poor signal.

Because of the different ways of measuring - K vs M - your ADSL line speed of 3256Kpbs is about 3Mbps, or less than 10% of your router's specified wireless capability. Even allowing for wireless overhead and an average signal your wireless is probably at least 4x the speed of your ADSL.

Most likely the cause is because you're with a ****e ISP - most of the well-known ones that advertise on the telly fill this description. The speed of 3256Kpbs ("3 meg") only describes the speed between the exchange & your house. The ISP also has to purchase servers & rack-space at Telehouse (to peer with other UK ISPs & services) and bandwidth to Europe & the US, and this is just one way ISPs tend to skimp on costs. The bandwidth they have available is probably fine if you want to play online at 4am, but not during periods of peak usage.

To check that your wireless signal is OK test with a laptop, placing it in the same room as your consoles. Signal strength of "low" is probably fine - you only need to worry about "poor" or if the laptop gets disconnected frequently. If you're able to surf the web consistently on the laptop then your router is probably fine.

Make sure you don't have Kazaa, Skype, Bittorrent or the like running when testing.

Not sure but isn't lags, in case of a dsl connection, often cause by the fact that the interleave mode is enable on the line?

I should say that signal strength isn't an issue (its normally excellent on the PC and 100% on the ps3.

BT is my ISP, thanks for the posts, any more info?
