Encoding for streaming to 360 - here we go again

    32. How can I get Windows Media Player 11 to stream MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264 to my console?

By default, Windows Media Player 11 does not support MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264. Your first option is to install a 3rd party MP4 DirectShow decoder to import MPEG-4 part 2 and H.264 files into your library. Once they are in your library they can be streamed to your console and they can be played from within Windows Media Player 11 on your PC.

An alternative approach is to rename all of your mp4 files to have an ?.avi? file name extension. This will enable Windows Media Player 11 to import them into the library and will allow them to be played on your Xbox 360. To enable the playback of these files on the PC, you will still need to install an appropriate decoder on the PC.
So, I have an H.264 encoded file saved as a .m4v (see point #2 on that page). The poinst quoted above says all I need to do to get media player to notice this is to rename as a .avi. Done this, and can play it happily in media player using the CoreAVC codec (lovely). But...... media player won't add the thing to its library so I can't get the 360 to notice it (bloody server crap - just share my folders like xbmc ffs... ) even though media player lists all my actual avi files

    Any ideas?

Sorted. Turned off mp11 server and used zune server instead. Looks fantastic.

In case anyone was wondering, I used handbrake to covert the DVD to .m4v
Output is fantastic for video quality. Took about 5 hours on my dual core athlon 3800.

Anyway, can anyone explain why the 360 only accepts dual channel AAC sound when using .mp4 style containers? It accepts AC3 for .av
Pain in the arse. Thought I'd solved any easy way of backing up all my DVDs and streaming them. But no. Gits.
