Did you try switching the Dynamic Normaliser on as I suggested? That drops the volume down slightly.

but wouldn't the normaliser, as the name suggests, make quiet stuff louder and loud stuff quieter?

also i imagine it won't be an algorithm or whatever that's actually affecting the volume like the ipod (which i find drains the battery more with sound check on than off), more like the ipod shuffle which simply adjusts the volume by turning it up and down by the notches already available, if that makes sense?

basically, with my ipod shuffle, if i had sound check on and turned the volume right down to the lowest level, some songs would be completely silent until i increased the volume a notch or two

It makes everything the same volume, on the quietest setting I've found games to be slightly quieter with it than without it.

That's what I use if I want to keep the volume down.

I've just given that a go and there didn't seem to be any noticable difference, really. Certainly not enough of a difference to make me feel comfortable playing in a house full of sleeping people gone midnight!

can't think of anything else really, other than that (or some sellotape, etc)

on a side note, when playing streetfighter on my slim if i'm using the built-in speakers, my thumbs keep covering them up when doing moves

Get a really long jack to two phono cable, hook it up to the AUX on your Hi-Fi from the PSP headphone socket, and turn the Hi-Fi down instead.

That's a totally hassle free solution!

Haha, a Sony Hi-Fi? Maybe that was their motivation all along...

I suspect I'll be resorting to Blu-Tak for the near future, elastic bands sounded so promising but they interfere with right and square a bit!

In the long term I'll email them tirelessly and ask them for a firmware fix to lower the volume, that's sure to work!
