    Wii Dead

2 weeks into my brand-new Wii and forcing myself through the kiddies saccharine-fest that is Super Paper Mario, when the machine threw up error message advising switch-off - accompanied by much grunting from drive.

Advised by handbook to plug AC cord for 5 mins, but problem recurs. Phoned Nintendo Service Center and miraculously got through on second attempt. Tele-bod makes preliminary diagnosis of 'intermittent drive failure' and has sent out pre-paid mail sticker to return offending machine.

My question is: is this repairable or should I get a replacement Wii? And if 'replacement', does this usually mean brand-new or some patched-up knock-off? Will be mightily pissed off if the latter.

I sent mine back with the same problem just before Christmas.

I posted it off to them on the Monday via the Parcelforce 48 pre-paid sticker and it came back on the Friday of the same week via DHL.

They repaired my original machine. Apparantly since June of last year they've been repairing them instead of swapping them for new.

Mine started conking out a few months back. Plonking it on it’s side seems to have solved the problem. Though I do wonder what will happen if it does die - I’ve got 20 VC games on the bugger.

To both of you having problem, I heard horrific stories of the condition of Wiis that have been returned.

If you have no downloaded virtual console games or anything, I'd get to the shop to swap ASAP, especially as you get it swapped there and then and so aren't Wii-less. And you'll get another stars card!

If you have an SD card you can back up your game saves... in fact if you sent it off to Nintendo I'd do that anyway.

The problem with that is that you can't find one in the shops. Oh well, it's gone off to Nintendo now. Let's hope it doesn't come back even more ****ed than when it went...

                  This'll make you guys laugh...

Got Wii back from Nintendo Service Centre yesterday. No report in box.
Got exactly same fault the moment I started it up. Phoned NSC this morning. Guy said the main testing team identified 'intermittent drive fault', they instructed repair team to replace drive, repair team tested it themselves and because they found nothing on first try they sent it straight back. The clue was in the diagnosis: 'intermittent'. Now it's on it's way back again. If it comes back still knackered a 3rd time the customer is automatically guaranteed a brand-new Wii, so here's hoping they screw it up again.

Nintendo are almost as bad as M$ when it comes to repairing ****. My original DS lite that I'd sent them for repair of a hinge crack was sent back to me as a refurb, only problem was that the refurb generated the crack too after about a fortnight.
