Modding a Jap N64 to play US games

Is it possible to remove the tabs without opening the casing? I don't have the required screwdriver and would prefer not to have to buy one.

I did mine years ago by shovnig a hot soldering iron into the cartridge slot and onto the plastic tabs to melt them, probably not the best way to do it but it worked for me.

I could lend you mine as long as I get it back. PM me your address.

It's a screwbit, so I'm presuming you have a screwdriver that bits fit into. If you don't then posting that too will start to get a bit pricey at which point, you might as well source your own.

        ^^^

That must have been tricky! I made a big enough mess of melting the tabs down after I'd removed mine from the case

A neater option is to use a stanley knife but don't know how easy it'd be if the console wasn't opened up.

I almost chopped my limbs off WITH the case open.... Don't think you could do it without.

The gamebit is a lot cheaper than I thought ... I'll more than likely go with that option. Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated

I'm another advocate of the 'shoving a hot soldering iron into the flaps of the N64' school. In hindsight, perhaps not the most sensible of options. My N64 is still going strong tho...

Unlike my SNES, when I bought my RGB modded N64 they had already taken out the tabs in the slot for me. I guess it seemed naturally given they'd already taken it to bits for the output hack.

You can always heat the tip of an old BIC pen, push it on top of the security screw whilst the plastic is still in its wobbly/partially melty state and you have a cheap (yet a little flimsy) "gamebit screwdriver"..
