    PS3 Dead

    Optical drive failure.

They're swapping it for a refurb tomorrow. I performed a full system backup (19 gigs, 45 minutes). Anything else I ought to do? I intend to format the thing tonight but will a restore on the new unit bring back all my accounts, game saves and downloaded games?

Assuming you have a BC-capable model, I'd make sure you get the same back. Other than that you should be OK, apparently a full backup does the whole kit-and-caboodle so you should be good to go.

How long have you had it out of interest?

Full backup will only work if you are restoring to the same PS3 as I found out when mine was swapped just after launch

I would make a seperate backup of the game saves you want to keep

Aparently the last firmwire update has been doing somthing to PS3's to break the drives in them since before christmas, if you look on you tube there are litteraly hundreds of videos with people who have broken PS3 disk drives for instance.

Mine is broken and the garuntee has run out, but for some reason I get the feeling that I will pay to have it fixed and then the firmwire will just eventualybreak it again.

Might be best to wait until a new firmwire is out.

All sorted. Thanks for the heads up Mike. managed to back up COD4, RFOM and Oblivion before it got swapped.

rmoxon - You mean the drive breaks immediately after the new firmware is downloaded? That sounds highly unlikely I have to say.

highly unlikley it may be, but such a common occurence that its even more unlikley that it isjust coincidence really.

like I said, there are literaly hundreds of people with the same probablem and it only started happening after the latest firmwire was released.
