Doing a clean-up on my laptop

I have a Sony Vaio that came installed with an unbelievable amount of ****e on it. Instead of cleaning it up when I got it like I should have done, I just went ahead and used it. Looking at it now, there's about 40GB or more taken up that I can't account for and a whole bunch of programmes listed that I have no idea what they are.

I don't want to do a wipe as I have a lot installed that I do need and would be a pain in the ass to reinstall and I have many important files.

Is there some easy way to clean out the crap or is it a case of jut going through everything bit by bit until I find what I need and what I don't?

Going to be a case of going through the stuff manually.

Add/remove programs is usually the tidiest way to remove programs, there is a great free application called Treesize that shows which programs/files are taking up all your space - well worth downloading and very simple to use.

Cool, thanks. I'll track that down and give it a shot.

        Hi.

Ccleaner and treesize should help you get rid of a load of stuff. 40G seems a little excessive!
If you track down "Spacemonger" (instead of treesize) that is a very easy to use program to show disk space graphically. Great for tracking down stray files.
