Xbox 360 Gamer tag question

Hey everyone,

I hope to get my 360 in about a week. But I was wondering if it possible to register a gamer tag from Xbox.com or wherever before I buy my console and then sign in with it/buy gold.

The reason i'd like to do this is so I can reserve the gamer tag I want.

EDIT: Ok it seems it's taken.

EDIT: I found the page on Xbox.com to register a gamer tag, and it's not available, but I think that's for using on the site.

When I check the gamercard through mygamercard.net it says the gamercard 'does not exist on Xbox Live!'

Could it still be available?

If the website says it isn't available then it probably isn't
