PS3 (and others) on an LCD monitor?

I would like to get the best out of the PS3 by getting an HD display. Unfortunately a 1080p HDTV costs quite a pretty buck and I would like to go for the "full" resolution. I was looking into some cheap LCD monitors and came up with the LG L246WH-BN. I got a little exited, but I'd like to know for sure. I'd also be using this to view movies. How does the 16:10 resolution fare here, for example? Will any picture display at all? What about sound? The display also has a component input and was thinking if one can connect a GameCube or PS2 on to it? (Sounds far fetched, considering there's no NTSC/PAL thing going on.)

    I found some info here.

If this would work, I would ditch my TV and use this as a primary display. I could connect a DC (VGA input), GC, PS2 (Component through switcher) and PS3 (probably even my computer with a DVI to HDMI cable, if possible) at the same time. Or is this just a pipe dream?

edit: Is 1080p/i overrated compared to 720?

I found a bargain priced monitor that sounds ideal for gaming (even older machines)

Depends on the monitor I suppose, but I've got a BenQ 24" monitor that I decided to try my PS3 on, and whilst games running at 1080p looked gorgeous, those running at 720p looked terrible, as they had to be scaled up far too much, and I think tv's tend to handle that sort of thing better.

I also hooked my Wii up to the monitor, and not only did it look shockingly bad, but VC games didn't work at all.

Needless to say, my consoles went straight back to the living room

Terrible, huh? It's grainy or something? How can a TV make it look better? I really would like to go for the monitor option, simply because of the price and I really don't need a TV! The response time is lower on monitors, is it not?

I recently moved my 360 onto my PC desk and hooked it up to my 1680 by 1050 monitor, being that the 360 doesn't support this resolution it has to upscale from 720p and it does look noticably worse for it, grainier and jaggier, but its not so bad that it bothers me. I would imagine the picture would be worse on a 1080p display.

I guess though as PS3 supports 1080p you should get very nice results from it, although im unsure if all games are 1080p, however stuff like the Cube, Wii anything standard def would likely look quite bad, as they do anyway on lcd tv's.

Personally I would say the best setup would be to get the monitor for PS3 gaming and then get a small cheap crt tv for any old consoles, standard def looks miles better on crt tvs.

There are only about 3 games that truly support 1080p also the chances are your Monitor won't accept a 1080p resolution image as it isn't 1080p resolution.

Why not think a little out of the box and buy a TV which has been given exceptionally good reports by some PC mags/users when used as a monitor.

The one recomended by PC Format recently is the Hannspree XV JT01 32E2 and sounds like a damned good bargain at ?350. Wish I had the money: 32" WS 720p/1080i, 8ms response, VGA, HDMI, Component, 2 SCART, S-Video and composite. No digiital tuner but as the TV functions aren't of interest what more could you want?

Considering 99% of current gen games (ie- not wii) are 720p, i'd say get a native screen, otherwise most of what you use will look worse than it would on a dedicated 720p screen due to it not having a good scaler.

If you wanted blu-rays too on the otherhand, it wouldn't be so clear cut.
