The bass is too loud on my home cinema! Any ideas?

    Hi guys,

Before I go off and bother the avforum people, I thought that I would try this in here.

Basically, about a couple of months ago I bought a Samsung HT-X200R Home Cinema set-up and I've been really pleased with it. However, the bass level is really loud and there doesn't seem to be any way to alter it in the settings. Also, the the subwoofer is passive and doesn't have any kind of volume control on it.

Anybody got any ideas how I could solve this issue? Could I possibly buy an active subwoofer (with it's own volume control) and replace the current one?

    Cheers.

If it's an all in one package, you probably can't replace the subwoofer/speakers.

I've had a look on the Samsung website, and they only seem to have an X200 or an X20R model listed, there wasn't an X200R.

Having gone over the manual for the X200, I'm really surprised to see that there doesn't actually seem to be an option for this, which is very strange. Your best bet is to try changing the dynamic range compression setting.

The X20R manual does mention settings for speaker levels though:
Menu > Audio > Sound Edit

SW will let you adjust the volume of the subwoofer +/- 6dB. If you find that isn't enough, then you can raise the other channels as well, and lower the volume control, which would effectively let you have the sub up to -12dB.

If you don't have those options, the best thing I can suggest is to try repositioning the sub (make sure it's not in a corner / near a wall) or to disconnect it.

Dude, if possible, just get some sponge and shove it into the sub's bass port.

Also if you have trouble repositioning it in the room, try putting it on the sofa (or just in front). No. Wait. Come back.... Seriously. Then walk around the room and see where the ideal amount of bass is and then put it there. This doesn't always work, but it can often make things easy.

You will get more bass if the speaker is near a wall (esp in corners) so try moving it about.

Turn up the treble so it's all at the same volume

Haha.. if only there was a treble control!

Had a mess around with the dynamic range compression settings lastnight but I didn't get much joy. I'll try moving the sub (maybe to another room! ) and see about sticking some sponge in there.

                Cheers guys.

I find that on all in one packages and cheap subs they are used to make noise as apposed to bass. They are set to make a thumping and annoying sound as initially this sounds good and sets them apart from systems without subs. As a rule you cant do much about this other than turning the volume down !
