World of Warcraft question re: alt characters

Hello all, this may be a bit of a simple question but I was wondering about the numerous people who play WoW and have alternative characters - are you paying monthly fees for each of the characters or is there a way of paying your subscription and having a few on the same payment?

Your WoW monthly subby lets you create 10 characters per server, more than mere mortals can manage.
You'd only want a second subscription if you wanted to have more than 10 characters on the same server.
