    5.1 Blu-ray help

I've got a Sony 5.1 Home Cinema setup hooked up to my PS3 via optical lead for Bluray playback. The Home Cinema recommend I use a surround field setting called 'A.F.D STD' which apparently automatically detects what format the sound is or something or other. My PS3 is set to optical outpout, has Dolby 5.1 setting active and has AV sound setting set to Linear PCM (other option is Bitstream).

With the settings above, I'm not getting sound from my rear speakers, if I set the Home Cinema surround field setting to 'Pro Logic' it seems to work i.e. ambient background noises etc coming from rear speakers. Is this correct?

I just wanted to know why couldn't the recommended 'A.F.D STD' setting not detect where it usually does when viewing DVDs and am I set up correctly (tis all still a bit new to me this HD/Home cinema caper)?

    Cheers

You need to set it to bitstream. Will work then.

LPCM will only give you stereo over optical.

Ahh, I thought with it saying Multi-channel when set to BitStream, it meant all speakers would churn out the same audio and not individual channels of sound.

Another question, on the BluRay AV settings I have the option to select Video Format types, between RGB and Y,Cr,Cb, Y,Pr,Pb. Is it best to force the setting to one of them types or just keep it on Automatic setting?

      Thanks for your help.

Hi Hoolak. I've got a Sony HTSF1000 sound system and use PS3 via Optical. You need to set it to bitstream (as mentioned above) however if you try to listen to an HD sountrack on a Blu-ray it will still only come through the front speakers (and the back ones via Pro-Logic only) as Optical doesn't have enough bandwidth to handle uncompressed 5-channel sound. HDMI is the only way to get 5-channel uncompressed as far as I know (I'm sure people more knowledgable than me can explain it!) It's up to you whether you prefer normal directional 5.1 / DTS or an uncompressed soundtrack using Pro-Logic for the rears.

As for your picture setting question I just set mine to Automatic - no idea sorry!
