Laptop Power Supply Question

Lo,

I have a Dell Insprion 6400 and I require an additional power supply unit - I was looking at one in Maplins which is a universal pack:

I'm wondering if this is going to be suitable - It is a fair saving on the one sold by Dell, and I have a local Maplins which I can pick up from.

I'm presuming it will be fine, but not really sure to be honest

Amps looks a bit low compared to the original. Maybe go for 5 AMP or higher.

i think the inspiron 6400's take 19.5V/4.62A

if you get it wrong you'll blow the psu or possibly the laptop itself.

i think it goes something along these lines:

psu gives less than what laptop requires = psu damage
psu gives more than what laptop requires = laptop damage

although maybe when the values are just a bit lower, it just means the laptop will be a bit slower to charge.

but if you multiply voltage and amps you get the power, which for the inspiron is about 90W. as it stands, 3A and 4.62A sound pretty close together, but 19.5V x 3A is only 60W, so 60W and 90W is a big difference

Not a lot of info there regarding volts/amps etc - I can't check what is actually printed on mine until I go to work tomorrow. Actually this is why I need a spare, so I have one for home and work.

googling got me the value i gave in my post above.

as that's the psu your model has, the 65W makes me think it's probably 18.5V/3.5A or 19V/3.42A

as for the ebay ones, i wouldn't go near them with a barge pole. if you're lucky it'll probably make a nice buzzing sound, if you're not it'll go pop when you least expect it
