    PSP Firmware Problem

I bought a second hand PSP from someone on here a while back and the chap mentioned that it had custom firmware on it. I'm not really interested in all the homebrew stuff so he kindly scaled it back to 'official' firmware for me.

Now the latest firmware seems to not like PSPs that have previously had custom firmware installed, and I can't get it to install. Therefore, I can't play God of War.

I'm a real dunce when it comes to this kind of stuff so if anyone has the most basic solution please let me know.

No one else had this issue?

When I try to download the latest firmware to play recent games I get a message stating that my "configuration is incorrect".

    Anybody??

I had to update to the latest custom firmware before I could load the official firmware on my PSP. Hope that helps mate.

What's the latest custom firmware? And how do I install it?

I've not picked up the PSP in months so it's hopelessly outdated. Also I've never dabbled in the homebrew side of things (got a GP2X so never needed to) so forgive my stupidity.

Which firmware are you running now?

I'll have to check when I get home, but I can't imagine it's a very high one. The most recent game I've successfully played is Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles (US version), although I'm not sure if that prompted me to update the firmware or not.

Had a quick look around and I believe this might solve the issue? Not sure though.

How annoying. I wouldn't have bought the second hand PSP if I'd have known this was going to happen.

I'm running firmware 3.71. I've tried downloading the latest firmware from new games (got the error message mentioned in the first post) and connecting to the network update, but for some reason my PSP refuses to connect to my wireless connection.

Will try to manually download the latest firmware and install via USB.

Had a quick look around the net and uncovered this thread.

Doesn't look too promising for me ATM.

Could try downloading a slightly older version of the official firmware to see if you get the same error.

Worse case, you can just download the latest custom firmware, there shouldn't be any problem playing games as they stay pretty up to date.

Don't you need some kind of special battery to download custom firmware though?

Bit annoyed with this, TBH. I purchased the PSP hoping it would be all above board and now it looks like I can't even play proper games. I really don't give two ****s about all this homebrew nonsense.

Ok, going to try and download an older version of the official firmware tonight see what happens, but if my trips around various forums on the net are anything to go by, I'll have the same problem.

It would appear that all this custom firmware installation damages/changes parts of the code on the PSP and this is what is preventing the install.

I really want to resist installing custom firmware again, I just want the official firmware. Like I said there's no point in jumping through hoops for custom firmware when I have no intention of making use of it.

What 3.71 custom firmware you are using now? Is that a 3.71-M33?
Custom firmware has a recovery mode that can restore your PSP back to an old version official firmware and and you can update it officially through the MS or network update.
