360 vga cable no hd options in menu ?

last night i connected up my 360 to my pc monitor and went to setup the resolution etc but found no option for hd 480p, 720p etc.

all i got was a lot of resolutions to choose from which i selected 1280x 1024 which i thought looked ok but this must be 4:3 as the picture looked quite stretched.

the monitor is widescreen so i'm guessing i need to set the monitor to another setting to get 720p as i know the monitor will do that with its native resolution being 1680 x 1050.

also when playing dvd's does the xbox output 480p through the vga cable ?

    thanks

You will only see options for 480p/720p when you're using a component or HDMI lead. With a VGA connection you get different resolution options. 1280x720 is 720p for example.

i understand now as i was totally lost. should i set the resolution to the nearest available one to the native resolution of my monitor ?

so any other resolution than 1280x 720 which is 720p mean its a standard vga signal ?

as i'm wanting to get the best image quality on my monitor for games and watching dvd films

Ideally you should set it to the same resolution as your monitor. The option for 4:3 or widescreen is a separate option from the resolution, so you'll need to set that too.

You might aswell just leave it at 1280x720, you won't gain anything setting it higher

thanks all, i've now set the output to 1280x720 and it looks very nice, only tried ridge racer 6

one thing about those other resolutions it made the image go wonky on my monitor so had to keep recentering the image.

its a very nice option till i get a new tv.

also what happens to playing back dvds via the vga cable is that in hd or just normal ?

sorry for bumping this old thread, but is there anyway of enabling 60htz over vga? as i cant seem to play hitman as it seems to think my xbox is set at 50htz or my tv cant support it, eventhough i know it can over componant.

You need to connect the Composite cable, enable 60Hz on there, then switch back to VGA. You only need to do this once.

It's basically a bug in the game, it's checking the SD settings, not taking into account the fact that you're using VGA.

cheers dude, i just did it, for some reason i had to switch the componant to tv mode and not hd or whatever it is as there was no pal or ntsc settings on that!

but its all sorted now cheers.

Something else to note is that any original Xbox games that were 50hz only won't work over VGA. If you try to run them you'll get an error message saying the game doesn't support VGA.
