i bought one for that price from argos, and i've bought a few cheapy films for it already. Sure its dead but ive bought films i know i'll watch again and again.

Another reason was that i didnt want want to put extra wear on the drive when i watch plain dvds so that now the hd-dvd takes the pain.

I got one of these as an add on for my HTPC and like bri says you can get loads of bargin films for it. Be carefull with your choice of software for pc as cyberlink have dropped hddvd in version 8.
Has loads of other uses as well - mate just used it to install xp on his eeepc with it.
HD DVD playback on the 360 with it is ok but it realy shines when hooked up to a decent htpc.

Bundled with the remote, I think it's a bargain myself. Also leaves the integrated 360 drive free just for gaming.

Are any studios still going to release HD-DVD movies? Given the low sales of players I'm guessing not.

I've been into HMV in Leeds and they haven't had any Hd-dvd's at all. There seem to be plenty of good deals online though. Hot Uk Deals seem to regularly have some great pffers posted.

I'm using mine more just for upscaling DVD.

does the hd drive need the monitor to be hdcp compliant as i'm not sure if it is but the monitor is recent only a few months old

doesn't the 360 upscale dvds without the hd drive ?

I don't think they started to introduce the copy protection part of it in disc yet, so you'll be ok even through VGA or component

I run mine through my VGA input on my LCD and The Prestige worked fine on it. I haven't tried anything else, yet.

It does if you have a VGA cable. With component it just outputs at 480/576p.
