XBox 1 laser 'disc error' question

I have problems with my 2002 'Jet Set Radio Future/Sega GT 2002' model XBox (Seagate version, I think.) I've always treated it with respect, but since around mid-2005, it developed disc-read errors, so I had to unscrew my XBox, clean the laser, screw it back together again (a minor yet frustrating process). Everything worked fine for a month or two, then I had to open it again, and have had to repeat the procedure ad infinitum for the last few years.

Even then, it won't play some games that only have minimal surface damage/scratching - and I *know* that these would work on a more stable XBox than mine.

Is there anything else I can do to make my XB read discs better other than regularly re-cleaning the laser lens? Or any useful tips???

I'm guessing it's a Thompson drive then. A friend of mine had the same problem ONLY with that disc. There's one final option then: http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/t...entiometer.htm
If not, just backtrak on that page, there are other tuts as well.

Pretty sure I have a spare Xbox drive kicking around, don't know what model it is though. Let me know and I'll have a look for you if you like.

You need the Samsung DVD drive. It is the most reliable and media tolerant of the available drives used.

Seconded - it'll play pretty much everything you'll throw at it - and they're cheap nowadays....
You could pop into a branch of Game/Gamestation and grab yourself a second hand console, but ask em if you can have one with a Sammy drive (they let me look anyhow - even chucked me two extra controllers when I explained I was going to ram upgrade it )

I checked this site and it seems like I have the Philips drive:

So if I got hold of a Samsung drive, could I just remove the Philips drive and plonk the Samsung one in with no problems? Also, given that I've got a chunkier 'old style' XBox, can a more recent drive be inserted (different screw layouts etc.)??

PS: Cheers for all the help.

Yep - you can pop a Sammy/Thomson/Phillips xbox1 drive into any xbox1. You can also pop a pc drive in there if you want, but it requires more fiddling about with - there's tuts over at xbox-scene.com, main page under the 'tutorials' section
