    50/100 HZ on CRT/LCD (Comparison)

    Hiya peeps.

Right this is getting really confising. Just when I thought I knew what I was talking about, I actually don't have a scooby!!

Can somebody give me a definition on what 100hz does on a crt and what it does on an LCD? I know its a totally different thing but I'd like some feedback from you guys.

And where do the FPS come into it? Do the frames double aswell? (on an LCD)

    Hope thats not too confusing.

    thanks!!

100Hz flicker free technology is a confusing subject but a simple explanation of some of the things you're asking about can be found at:-

At Philips, we innovate with purpose, improving people's health and well-being through meaningful innovation.

    and more detailed:-

100hz, on standard def TV viewing is absolutely, and i mean absolutely abysymal, blurry and awful.

100Hz on ddecent , good CRT set, with Velocity Modulation switched off, like on a good trintron which gives you the option, is absolutely gorgeous, especially on good trintron's, with their upscaling technology built in that can be switched off too. Also Phillips pixel plus 100HZ crt's are absolutely gorgeous, and match the crt's from Britain.

I have an HD Sony from Japan, which is a 36 inch HDCRT, and that imo is the greatest televsion ever made, every mode looks perfect, and unlike LCD, every resolution looks absolutely gorgeous, be it interlaced or progressive.

HDCRT is the most gorgeous thing evver, and flat screen technology simply hasn't caught up yet in PQ in lower resolutions and HD.

The new flat screen technoligies like OLED, SED, and FED look far more promising and hopefully FED and SED come out as they are just like flat screen CRT, and great in any resolution.

For standard def TV and consoles a good CRT is the business. I had a 100Hz Loewe Aconda and the picture from the Xbox and my DVD were marvellous. I gave the TV to my in-laws and whenever I see it I wish I had kept it for the Wii and Saturn.
Only downside was that light gun games didn't work with it.

But I made a choice to HD for the 360 and overall with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray on the scene now I think I made the right choice.

Well I have a Sony Wega 100Hz CRT and I'm less enthusiastic about than some others here. With the right game it an be stunning with the 100Hz clearly reducing flicker but that isn't the full story. I also get certain digital artifacts like motion blur, trailing and posterisation, which I think is also called colour banding.

Using RGB SCART of course: it's great for bright colourful games such as Tekken, platformers of the Ratchet & Clank kind and even PAL Gran Turismo. But give it something darker, more shadowy and contrasty like your typical survival/horror and even certain areas of games like TR: Anniversary or Soul Reaver 2 and it can look poor at times.

The way these 100Hz CRT sets work also means that for many models it can not just be switched off. When you're given a 50Hz or even an Off menu option some digital processing is still going on and those artifacts may still be troublesome.

These sort of hassles are what led me to get buy a second gaming only 32" CRT JVC with HD capability via YUV/YPbPr. Just to confuse issues I have read this is actually working at 75Hz. Whatever, all I know is that although it gives superb PQ generally it has some quirks and there are still games which do look better on the 100Hz Sony. The Sony also gives particularly good S-Video quality.

In short: I don't think there is any one TV, 100Hz, ED, HD ready CRT or LCD, PLasma etc, that can be described as a universally good gaming platform. ie. one that will handle everything from SD retro-consoles through lowly RF connections to modern HDMI gaming at 1080p. If there was we would have heard about by now and it would be flying of the shelves.

I have a 100hz CRT (Tosh PF2) and I never, ever run it in 100hz. It's only ever in progressive or pseudo-progressive (deinterlaced 50/60hz).

The major problem with crt's, is the radiation. I get headaches & fuzzy eyes from using my old 32" CRT. The way they work - and all that tech inside, just isn't good for you.

A good LCD is much better. I can look at my LCD for a long time - and still feel fresh.

Remember, there aren't many great lcd's around. You have to research on the AVForums.
