USB plug and play = hit and miss

I have a synthesizer which can connect to my PC (Windows XP), however it seems to be hit and miss whenever I try to connect it. It usually takes umpteen tries to get the thing recognized by Windows.

What is the usual cause of this problem? The synthesizer, Windows? My USB ports?

    Any help appreciated.

some devices I've had claim they need to be connected to the main USB's that come straight from the motherboard (usuually at the rear of the machne) rather than daisy chained efforts round the front or on your monitor.

they werent' keyboards but worth a try ?

Is it an M-Audio product by any chance? I had similar problems with one of their soundcards.

        No it's a Waldorf Blofeld.

To get it recognised by the computer it takes several plug/unplugs. This happens with both front and back USB ports.

This may be a bad contact.
Be ware plug and unplug too much may burn your USB port or the USB module of the synthesizer.

Do you have many other USB devices plugged in? I find with some USB stuff that it doesn't like being connected when there are large amounts of other things attached ( even on a powered USB hub ).
