Im on my 6th Xbox also since 2005 and this time i got an Elite but if this one goes RROD on me then that will be it, i will get it replaced and then sell it on as it realy will be the last straw for me with MS.

6th? Holy crap, I would have given up long ago. You're a patient man. I reckon I'd probably go to three but, really, is it worth the hassle? Not for me.

Is MS replacing you refurbished machines or new ones on those 5?

I had the RROD myself last year with less than 2 weeks to go on the 1 year manufacturers warranty, bit of a close shave! MS repaired and sent me back my original console (apparently the motherboard had gone tits), been fine so far (fingers crossed).

Just wanted to update you guys.

Turns out it was number 5 and its been 16 months. To be fair Microsoft do have a fantastic free customer service department.

The very nice and friendly woman on the phone, gave me a years free Xbox live gold membership and could not be sorry enough. My console is winging its way back to Germany, however she did tell me, as i got a new console last time, they have to try and repair at least once before i can have a new one. I only got the free membeship because i said i had bought a years membership and as it was going to take 4-6 weeks to repair i was losing 4-6 weeks membership i had paid for.

She could not help but laugh, when said said "what is your problem" i replied "i have the red rings of death"

You should ask for replacing you a new console rather than keep repairing defect or refurbished ones.

Heh, I said exactly the same thing and she clearly had that as the default option on her system as she just went into name and address and said they'll replace it. I guess the Red Ring of Death is now the MS official term.
