New HD telly, PS3 Blu Ray slightly stuttery playback

    Hi all,
Well my HD LCD telly arrived today. It's a Philips something or other, LCD, 1080p and I now have the PS3 hooked into it with an expensive HDMI cable (I was shafted, right? These are the same no matter what you pay for them?). The picture looks great but it's just ever so slightly stuttery. You wouldn't notice it a huge amount except when the camera pans and then it becomes apparent. Just slightly but enough for it to bug me.

This is Spiderman 3 by the way, it came with the PS3.

Any ideas? Wrong settings? Telly problem? PS3?

I'm guessing that your TV isn't 24 Hz compatible?

It's due to the difference in framerate between film and TV which causes a stutter, particularly in pans like you are seeing it in.

If your TV is compatible then make sure it's activated on the TV. If it isn't then the PS3 can work around that by doing this in the XMB:
    >BD/DVD Settings
    >BD 24 Hz Output (HDMI)
    >Off

It doesn't completely remove it but it should do a good job of reducing the problems that you are having.

That would be crappy if I bought a poor television but I really don't know a damn about them. All I knew with this one was that it did 1080p and the upscaled Sky picture they were running in the shop didn't look as bad as a load of the rest of them. Thanks for the tip. I'll adjust that setting.

I think this is the one I got - http://www.shop.philips.co.uk/katalo..._Pixel_Plus_HD

It makes no reference to 24Hz so you could well be right.

        Nice looking set!

Not seen much from Philips so I have no idea what the are like really. According to the PDF on their site it supports 60, 72, 75 & 85 Hz so turning off the 24 Hz option should make a difference to you.

I had the same problems with my TV when I first went HD and there was really bad problems with panning on which ever of the X-Men BDs I got free with the PS3.

Yeah, aside from this the set is great so far. RR7 and MGS4 look stunning on it. The upscaling from the SD telly isn't bad at all and, aside from the panning thing, the picture on that S3 Bluy Ray is pretty gorgeous. So, overall, I'm well chuffed.

But there are just so many variables and things to look for that I was baffled and it's not surprising something was missing. Not to worry. I'll change that setting and it should help.

          I appreciate the help!

If you can set the PS3 to a multiple of 24 then this also works i.e 72hz.

I may as well ask this here... I'm gonna get a PS3 shortly. Will any HDMI cable work? I've seen a lot on eBay for only about £3. How much did you pay for yours?

You don't really need to pay much for one. I went for a branded one which I think was Sony and it cost me about £10.

The only real difference you'll get between them is the shielding on the cable which should not really be anything to worry about unless you're really obsessive about this stuff and also the durability.

If you're going to be plugging & unplugging the cable all the time then durability could be an issue but if you're paying £3 for cable it's not exactly going to break the bank if it does fall apart.

Thanks for the tip on that setting, John. There's still a slight stutter but it's much improved.

Make sure you go into the features settings and turn on "native 1080" in the TV. claim back those precious pixels.

I'd been having a similar stuttering issue with my Bravia. Turns out the 24Hz was set to Automatic in the options. Switched it off and things are much improved.

Seems bizarre that HD tellies would have problems with the frame rate of movies, one of the first things you'd think of when coming up with a better telly. You know, if you were a telly designer.

Don't get me started on LCDs. They're still a hugely imperfect technology from my experience of oh... about 6 or 7 different makes.

My TV supports 24Hz (not native, but it doubles it to 48Hz or something like that so that there's no 3:2 pulldown, which is what causes the jerking) and it makes a world of difference. When I watch standard def 50/60Hz stuff it looks really jerky in comparison.

It's funny that now every new technology seems to have some problem that gets fixed in the next generation to keep everyone upgrading. Look how long everyone was alright with 576i CRTs (the only 'upgrade' would be to buy a bigger one), but in recent years we've gone to 720p, but then 1080p was coming, and now 1080p60 is being replaced by 1080p24, and I'm sure we'll start hearing talk of 1440p TVs soon. Even look at how long analogue TV worked, but 576i MPEG-2 digital broadcasts are already outdated enough that we'll need new MPEG-4 boxes to get terrestrial HD.

Still makes me annoyed how short-sighted they were in setting out the Freeview spec...
