Xbox Live showing offline always

One of my friends recently bought a 360 but strangely he's always showing as offline while he is in fact online. Does anyone know how you can change this? It has nothing to do with the setting on the blade where you manually set your status as that's set to show online. I know there's another setting under family settings but he says he can't change that since there's no child account on the console.

I've got a feeling it is a privacy setting that you can change on xbox.com

You can also change privacy settings on the machine by going into the Marketplace tab and selecting Account Management. All the privacy settings are in there I think.
