Which website host?

I am looking for a website host for a colleague who wants to upload a simple website for an MP. It will literally have about 10 pages of mostly text, with some images so he doesnt need a lot of space. He needs to buy a domain name and hopes to have an easy to use file uploading interface (no ftping or anything).

There are literally thousands so it will be the case of trusting word of mouth from the fine members here

Can anyone recommend one, that is preferably based in the UK?

I use 1and1 for my wife's sites. The control panel lets you upload stuff in a browser and also unzip stuff on the server. On some of the packages it lets you do 10 page website without any knowledge - you just change what's on the screen - it's not very flexible though...

However, the servers are in germany and my .com site never used to appear on google's "search only pages in the UK", but it does now (I think because I registered it on google local). Should be ok for a .co.uk though.

Don't use anything to do with pipex like 123-reg (at least not for hosting...)

Memset. Found them to be the best of those I've used. They are MILES ahead of everyone else I've tried, and priced pretty competitively.

You get good support, and up time is OK. My site goes down about once a year, sometimes for an hour, recently for about 3 days, but they bust a lung trying to fix things. TBH I'll stick with them for as long as I can, no need to change something if it's not broken.

I've been using Vidahost recently and they've been excellent. VEry quick to respond to any queries and their up-time has been perfect so far.

Have used Fasthosts for a number of years. Probably could get cheaper but their CS and reliability has been superb. I alway remember having a conversation and then email response about which Server O/S and then which piece of software I should use for a website I built. The level of time and personal touch blew me away, and I've stuck with them.
