    A couple of PS3 questions

    Hi all,
Not hugely technical questions, but thinking of picking up a U.S PS3 as wanted to play some older titles (again!) in 60hz. I only heard from a friend last night that the PSonline services are free, is this true? Also know that an 'unofficial' iplayer has been released, wondered if this worked on the NTSC models or just the U.K? Is there a web broswer i.e. can you 'surf' the net from the PS3? And finally...I presume if I opted for a U.K model then the older PS2 titles would run in 50hz not 60hz??
    Cheers

    • Yes, the online service is free
    • I think there's a portal that you can go to for playing stuff through the iPlayer (As it's just an embedded browser applet). The BBC did mention that they'll officially get it working on the PS3 at some point, not sure if that's progressed or not.
    • Yep, launched from the XMB. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done for the most part
    • Yeah, anything that runs at Pal50 will still run at that speed on the PS3

Just remember that the PS2/PS1 regions are absolute, so if you have mostly PAL PS2 games and you buy a US PS3 you won't be able to play them on there.

Yes, there's that as well . Try and source a 20GB/60GB US model for hardware backwards compatibility, or at least the 80GB model for software. 40GB has none. I think that's right for the US setup.

Next gen had better be single ****ing SKU for all consoles or I'll scream.

cheers lads, was aware of the backwards compatibility issues. Is the lag with online games bad? As I've been impressed with the 360 online and was under the impression the PSonline service is a bit cack in comparison?

I've only played Warhawk online but there's no noticable lag whatsoever, it's really solid.

Same here. Resistance is also supposed to be extremely solid online, even with the full quota of forty players.

Yep, Resistance is good, though I believe it has dedicated servers - could be wrong.

COD4 is also fine, rarely get lag problems - though connecting to friends is quite another matter, and connecting to anyone on Ridge is something else too!
