Do Unofficial RGB Gamecube scarts work?

I heard a rumour that only the official RGB scart for the Gamecube delivers a RGB picture?

I want to buy the following off ebay but need a confirmation:

I don't think so. I had a GAME brand one years ago which seemed to be RGB to me. Only problem I had with it was some diagonal banding which only appeared on my HDTV (odd).

If you want an official one, I've seen one for sale in the trade forum (can't remember who was selling it, though).

I can also confirm they work. I had madcatz one and you could clearly tell the difference.

Ive had a few GC rgb cables in the past, and in my own experience the official version far outshines the unnoficial ones.

          What he said.

I tried 3 or 4 3rd party leads and they were all woeful (dull, grainy or distorted picture) before buying the official lead which is infinitely better.

What about true RGB on a pal snes? I have the official cube cable but its too dark, I think I even removed the caps and it was still useless. any other method? I think the current scart cable I'm using for the snes is just SVHS as it looks very washed out.

I imported two (one for spare) RGB SCART cables with AV out blocks from Amazon .fr, as I couldn't find a UK supplier, when I first bought my GC. I think they were made for/by/branded: Big Ben Interactive. They both work fine.

I also have the official Component cable and you can compare the two reasonably easily as you have to have both connected at the same time (to get the audio out). With non-prog scan games the RGB cable is, as it should be, marginally superior and both clearly better than composite via SCART.

I'm not sure if the official cable can be altered - I haven't tried that one.

You can definitely get an unofficial Gamecube RGB cable and alter that though..

Remove all caps, 47 ohm resistors on R, G and B lines.

Sometimes they are wired up bizarrely though (mistakes at the factory / poorly paid workers unable to read circuit diagram etc) so it's best to check the pinout of the whole thing with a multimeter or somesuch.

I've no doubt that can be true, obviously I didn't have any problem with the GC cables I bought, but the number of faulty other brand Dreamcast RGB SCART cables I've come across isn't funny. I took one apart only a few months ago to try and repair it and found what I'm sure was incorrect wiring between the AV out block and the SCART plug.

Yeah.. the expression "you pay peanuts, you get monkeys" comes to mind..

Unfortunately much of the stuff that comes out of China is pure tat. Inc. many of these cables.

                      You should read this thread:

                      Gamecube scart thread from 2006

Link83's post still stands (as I have one of those cables).

There's one on ebay at the moment but that is not it.

Wow, cant believe its been two years since I typed that

Anyway, heres a picture of the Gamester Professional Gamecube Scart Cable me and Gunrock have:-

I actually bought a few of them a number of years ago with the intention of modifying them for use with PAL SNES consoles (which need the capacitors removed and 47ohm resistors put in their place) and RGB modded NTSC N64's (which just need the capacitors removing)

However, when I opened up the scart connector on one of them I found that the wires and pins are all sealed inside rubber! Even when I had cut through the rubber the capacitors were not there - I guess they must be inside the AV block which is half-way along the cable.

However they are very good quality - the cables are all very well shielded. The whole cable is at least twice as thick as the Official Nintendo scart cable. As Gunrock said "the thickness of the cable suggests you could perform hangings with it, should capital punishment every come back (and all the world's rope disappeared!) "

                        --------------------------------------------------------------

(I hope its ok to mention this here)
As they turned out to be no good for modding I have a few of these available if anybodys interested? - all brand new and sealed. They can only really be used on PAL Gamecubes or NTSC SNES consoles. As you can hopefully see in the pics they have an AV out block halfway along the cable which allows you to connect up additional composite/audio out cables should you wish (eg to send the sound to an amplifier) They also have a 'quick release' mechanism on the scart connector which is pretty nifty!

£6.50 each inc P&P if anyones interested? PM me if so

Gamestar make very good cables, comparible in image quality to Monster ones, but much cheaper.
