Which Xbox 1 Video Encoder has problems with 480p?

    Hi everyone,
I remember reading some threads a few years ago about how Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, and a number of other games would display a garbled picture when you tried to display in 480p on certain Xbox revisions due to a change in the video encoder chip used - and I just wondered which revision(s) it was that caused the problems?

I know the Xbox has had three different Video Encoders:-
    1.0-1.3 Conexant
    1.4/1.5 Focus
    1.6/1.6b Xcalibur
You can read about them here:-

But im not sure which one it was that caused the 480p problems with certain games?

I know 480p works on these games on xbox versions 1.0-1.3 which used the Conexant Video Encoder, so its only really between the 1.4/1.5, and the 1.6/1.6b (or both)

    Thanks in advance

      Thanks for that
So the 1.4/1.5 with the Focus Video Encoder are fine/have no reported problems?
I have a 1.4 myself you see, so just want to be sure before I buy a component cable...

I can't really find any information about the Focus encoders causing any problems, so I assume that it was just the xcalibur that did it

I think you'll find that's only for Xbox linux support (and some hombrew) as they couldn't work out how to program the driver correctly.

I've not heard of any issues with games causing an issue at 480p. It'd be pretty shocking if MS placed their own chip in those revisions and reduced the machine's functionality by accident. Most hardware revisions don't usually mess up something obvious like video output (I know the PSTwo's are less compatible with PS1 games, but that's not basic functionality such as the ability to draw on the screen).

EDIT: Woah! Just had a look around and apparently some games are screwed up because of that chip. How MS could have released that chip, in that state, is incredible!

Well I am pretty sure its true, I have read quite a few threads on it (Google "Panzer Dragoon Orta 480p problem") but just wasnt sure which version of xbox it was that caused the problems.

It is surprising that microsoft didnt notice the problem, but it only effects users who have a 1.6/1.6b console, and who are using the high definition pack, and are displaying in 480p, and playing one of a select few games! - so it really narrows down the amount of people who have found out about the problem.

Basically its all the Sega games and a few others that have the problem. They seem to be coded for 480p in a different way than other games, so they have a problem when they try to use the new Xcalibur video encoders.

              <EDIT> Just noticed your edit!
