360 Elite Optical Output

Right for the first time ever im going to use surround sound from my elite. I plugged the optical cable from my 360 to my surround sound headphones reciever. I selected digital 5.1 on the 360 settings, but im still getting audio coming through the tv.

Is it suppose to be normal? As im getting audio through my headphones.

How is the elite conneted to the TV? If it with HDMI then it is sending both sound and picture to your TV, which explains why you are getting sound.

If you are using VGA or component check the red and white phono plugs attached to the cable are not connected to the rear of the TV.

Im using HDMI. Is there anyway to disable sound? On my PS3, it disables the sound through HDMI.

When you are using HDMI output, are you using the official Xbox360 HDMI cable? If not, the sound output must be thru the TV. The official Xbox360 HDMI cable should have an extra optical output port for you to plug in your headphone to bypass the TV output.

Yes, im using the official cables as they come with the Elite as standard. I have the optical in the extra adapter it comes with. But i still get audio from the TV. I am getting audio through the optical though, just find it a bit annoying its coming through the tv. The PS3 turns it off.

The 360 doesn't. Just turn to the TV's volume down.

How annoying. Oh well at least i know im getting the full surround sound through my headphones now.
