    PS3 surround sound problem

    Hi guys.

I've got my 360 and PS3 both hooked up to my DVD player through the optical input using one of these adapters:

Software developer, engineer and fan of all things electronic

The 360 surround sound works fine, but the PS3's sound drops out for a split second at random intervals, and it's really annoying. I've tried changing the optical cables around, but the 360 works perfectly and the PS3 still had the same problem.

When I just had the PS3 hooked up on it's own, I can't recall having the problem.

Any advice greatly appreciated, as my TV speaker is well tinny and crap.

Is this just on the XMB, and does it happen when you haven't pressed anything for a few seconds?

It happens in game during play and cut scenes. It just seems totally random.

Have you changed the PS3 sound settings to tell it that you want the sound to be via your optical set-up? If not, change the sound settings.

Yeah I've selected optical, and then various combinations of the options ticking 5.1 and un-ticking DTS etc, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

That does sound like the same problem. I'll suppose I'll have to buy a new optical cable.

              Thanks mate.

I'm almost positive that the problem is being caused by the cheap optical cable that I was using.

Does anybody know where I can get a decent cheap-ish optical cable from? I refuse to pay ?24.99 that they're asking in Currys.

I usually get mine off of Ebay - there are some real bargains to be had, like this

Maybe also try Play.com, maplins or Amazon

I'm pretty much back to square one now.

I tested each individual optical cable from the PS3 straight into the dvd player, and all 3 worked fine. As soon as I run it through the splitter it stops working completely, so that made me think that maybe it was a problem with the splitter. So I tested the 360 through the splitter but that works fine.

Either I'm going mental, or my PS3 is a stuck up little **** and wants the DVD player all to itself.

So I don't know what to try next

EDIT: Unless the PS3 gives out a weaker optical signal than the 360, and it can't cope with going through a splitter?
