    (x/k)ubuntu

As kind of mentioned in an earlier thread. Who else has got this running then?

I actually installed it in my PC about a year ago as i thought it would be a good dry run before trying it out on my ps3. Never ut it on the ps3 in the end!

I have not used it too much but, just recently, I got annoyed with Windows and used it a bit more. It is still a little hard for me but everything seems to zip along now. Surprisingly, HD video files that would not run on my PC and stuttered now play using 35% CPU. That is obscene! Part of that will be cos I have a 64bit ubuntu and 32 bit XP but I am liking it.
I guess this is just a discussion thread but any tips for software to get and general advice would be cool.

At the moment, I am wondering what is the best encoding software for PSP videos.
I used "orbit" to grab iplayer files and then converted with pspvideo9. How can I do that now?

Been using linux now for about 8yrs, could never go back to using windows as my main operating system, only reason i've got a small partition of it on my computer is for steam, but hopefully with the rumors of a linux version it'll be coming straight off. As a desktop it's definately come a long way since I first started using it, if anyones thinking of finally giving it a go it's probably the best time to do so.

I'm using Linux Mint www.linuxmint.com now which is pretty much 98% Ubuntu as it uses the same software repositories but with all the extra codecs, DVD playback out the box, Java and Flash installed and a few other features, I'd definately recommend it above Ubuntu, especially for beginners.

I've been using Ubuntu on my Kohjinsha SH6 instead of Vista for a few months now and definitely prefer it. Vista...about 7 mins before it's usable. Ubuntu...about 90 seconds.
Though I'm using a Wubi install as it saved faffing around with stuff temporarily. Still practically has the same features.

iplayer software/script is fantastic. Only "problem" is it grabs the h264 versions and there are fewer of them than flash i believe. Still very useful though

I gave it a try earlier and like you said most of the stuff is flash based so couldn't download much, I'm sure they'll be a linux solution soon though.

As for a good encoder that you asked about earlier give Avidemux a try, if you fire up synaptic and do a search it's in there.
