    Wii Display Frequency Question

    Hi,

I'm thinking about getting a modded Wii soon, and I'm trying to decide whether to go for a UK or US system.

I'm just wondering, is the display frequency (i.e., 50/60Hz) determined by the console (as with Sega Saturn, Mega Drive, SNES, etc), or by the game software (as with PS2, PSOne, N64, etc)?

    Many thanks,

    Leynos

If you are talking about the virtual console games , it is determined by the console. You'll only get 50hz versions on a pal wii

I was meaning the game discs. I'm not fussed about the VC stuff.

      Thanks

As I only own a US Wii, I'm not 100%, but:

Games have to support 60hz in order to display in that mode. The preference for 60hz can be set in the Wii menu and any game that supports 60hz will display at that speed.

My US Wii always displays in 60hz. If you were to chip a UK console and play US or Jap releases then, naturally, they would display successfully in 60hz.

        Does that answer your question?

Check out this thread if you are planning to connect the Wii using RGB scart or s-video. You may have problems with video output when running US games on a UK Wii (or vice versa).

If you use composite (and have an NTSC compatible TV) or component you should be fine.

Yeah, I've already got a Wii component cable at my house for when friends bring their systems round.

              Cheers though.

I bought my Wii now. I went for a Wasabi Modded PAL Wii. I can now answer my own question.

As monomaniacpat says: The video mode (480i/576i/480p) is set by the game, but dictated by the setting in the console's option screen, so an NTSC game will play in 480i or 480p on a PAL console set appropriately. (This is over a component cable, of course).

The situation is more complex than that though. It seems that a good deal of NTSC Wii games won't boot on a PAL system, mod chip or no. I have four games so far (all NTSC) - Kiki Kai Kai, Mario Galaxy, Wario Ware and Octomania. Of these, only Mario Galaxy boots.

So it seems the only sensible option is to mod a US system. Either that, or buy a Japanese and/or US system and leave it/them stock.
