Questions about BBC i-player

i see the BBC offer their i-player content for download, does anyone know what format the files come in, and do you have to watch them in some BBC only player, i.e. can you use this download content on other devices or stream it?

There's a way of streaming iplayer downloads to a 360 (I think they are wmvs or mpegs?). I seem to remember seeing a guide on the eurogamer forums. I'll see if i can dig it out.
