Can i run import games on my tv?

My tv is an approx. 8 year old Sanyo 21 inch. It's 50 hertz, it's got 2 composite AV inputs, one scart, and one coaxial (no S-Video). If I bought a dreamcast and an import boot disk, would I be able to run Japanese and American games on my tv?

It should do. Make sure you use an RGB lead. Try looking up model number on the internet and checking the tech. specs.

the scart socket

yes it does, some games have a test function to see if 60hz will work correctly.

only on certain capcom games. Wether it goes into 50hz is a different matter. Oh and only 50hz i think will mean that your screen will roll continually.

Get a vga cable and use your monitor? It's either that or a new TV.

Where did you get the information that the TV was 50Hz? If it was from the back of the TV then it's almost a certainty thats just the power information. Pretty much every UK TV has 240V~50Hz on the back which just relates to the power.

I'd be very suprised if your TV doesn't support at least PAL60. I have a 12 year old 14" TV by Solavox (heard of them? Didn't think so!) and that runs in PAL60 fine.

If you want to play NTSC you have 2 options:

1) Use any input, but ONLY if your TV supports NTSC. If it doesn't you'll get a B&W picture.
2) Use RGB. With RGB it doesn't matter if your TV doesn't support NTSC 'proper' as it uses the raw colour signals.
3) If your TV doesn't support NTSC and doesn't have an RGB socket then your only other choice is to make the boot disc force PAL mode, which isn't recommended and wont work for most games, or if you have a computer monitor you can buy a DC VGA box and use your monitor.

Unfortunately the only way to tell is to get an NTSC game and an RGB lead and try it out.

For more information checkout the rather splendid guides on this very site: http://www.ntsc-uk.com/index.php?menu=tech

Thanx kirby. i've used the 60 hz only bonus GC Wind Waker disk, and it rolls on my tv so it is 50 hz. But my heart is now set upon a vga box to plug into the brand new dell laptop im typing this with. Thanx to everyone who contributed, and i guess that wraps this topic up.
Your laptop has a VGA input? That's very unusual.
