    Is this a good deal?

OK, so my desktop basically bit the dust recently - however it was very old and doddery anyway so I'm not too fussed, however a friend is offering to sell me theirs. I don't know a great deal about current spec PCs and value etc.

They are offering the following for ?250:

    Specification
Motherboard: DFI Infinity; onboard 5.1 surround, 4x USB, 1x Firewire, 10/100 LAN
    Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (2.2GHz clock)
    RAM: 2GB (4x 512MB) Corsair DDR 400
    Graphics: BFG GeForce 7600GT, 256MB VRAM, PCI-E
    Optical drive: Lite-On DVD-ROM, CD-RW (56x read)
Storage: Seagate 120GB IDE HDD, Seagate 320GB SATA HDD
Power: OCZ Modstream 520W modular PSU
Case: Antec P180, 4x 120mm case fans, silenced side panels, rubber grommets for HDD mounting, and removable dust filters
OS: Windows XP Professional SP2, fully licensed OEM. Media and certificate of authenticity supplied.
Accessories: USB keyboard, USB optical 5 button wheel mouse, Sennheiser PC-150 headset. Will supply the unused PSU cables and power lead.

HDDs report SMART status verified, CPU and RAM pass stability stress tests. Disk with the most current graphics drivers, and antivirus included.

I had a PC of similar spec back in 2005, although with less storage (I don't need more than 160GB in total personally). It really depends on what you plan to use it for. As an overall package, it's not too bad for the price; if you're buying it for gaming, then you may be a bit disappointed in terms of performance.

A couple of still good components - the PSU and case jump out - but I think this is overpriced. The CPU and GPU are badly outdated, it certainly wouldn't handle games very well. A DVD reader but not a burner.

I think you could do a lot better with your money.

I remember buying that processor in March '05 as already mentioned. There are solid components in there, but if I was to buy it I'd offer below £200; maybe in the region of £150-180.

It's going to struggle a little on more modern games (UT3, Bioshock etc) so if buying for that it's not going to do the job.

It's outdated and will struggle to play anything other than WoW and previous generation games.

However there are some quality components and extras there that do make it decent value for money. You can build a better system yourself for 20-30 more but you'd struggle to build one for 250 that could play any games.
