PS3 is dead, what to do?

Right, it's gone wrong, of all consoles to do it to me I of course expected it to be a sony one. It wouldnt be a playstation if it didnt have laser/drive issues.
Blu ray drive has gone, saddest thing is i have played THREE actual discs in this console since it was bought June 11 Metal Gear 4, Haze and Ratchet and Clank.
Was just enjoying the 4th game, Folklore watching the intro and punch me in the nutz it froze up.
Just wanted to ask how sony uk are for repairage and how it all goes, if anyone has had to send the console back that is. Thank you.

I've not had mine die on me yet (praying it doesn't as it's an original 60Gig US model) but from the instances I've heard about Sony pretty much swap it out in the space of a day or 2. It's really straightforward by all accounts.

You could have probably gotten it sorted in the time it took you to type your post

Where did you buy it from as places like HMV, GAME etc. will just to a straight replacement for a new unit if it's under warranty.

Well there aren't little men inside it who spin the discs...

The Cell is so powerful that it can spin disc drives, hard drives, and fans by the power of thought alone.

I might need to contact Sony myself. My PS3 froze the other night in the middle of a MGS4 cutscene. Now it wont recognize any discs I put in it. The little bubble spins in the top right corner, but there's no sound from the PS3 like it's reading or even spinning the disc.

                  60GB model too...MAN DOWN!!=o

Thats how mine started with Starship Troopers and it would work fine on MGS4 on bootup until the cutsecene.

Am i right in guessing if you send a 60GB model back under warranty they won't replace it with a 60GB as they don't make them anymore?

Could you ask them to replace the drive, instead of them replacing it with a new non-BC ps3?

They might just be able to fix the disc drive, and I would expect the worst and assume they couldn't replace the console with another 60GB model.

Though I'd be compelled to bitch and whine about it to them and try and get some compensation. Even if it is futile - I'm loosing features I paid for. >=(

This is already case closed but I thought I would post my experience up for future reference - last monday I discovered my PS3 wouldn't read any discs at all.. sent it off to the Playstation Clinic (yes it really is called that) in Japan that day and got it back fully repaired on friday. I have just got around to translating the letter they sent me and the culprit was...

Dust. Rather embarassing! I guess I did a pretty half arsed job of keeping the area behind the TV dust free, so all my fault. The PS3 bluray is obviously very sensitive (in fact they say so in the letter) but I'm happy that there was a definite cause that is under my control, and it's not just random technical failure.

P.S. I was concerned as I have a launch 60gb with the 4 USBs and backwards compatibility but it was a straight drive replacement, so I got my own machine back.

What's the procedure as my US 80gb console has lost the ability to output HDMI

It is over a year old and one of the orignal backward compat ones with all the card reader slts.

                            Will UK Sony repair still?

I can't really help you there as mine was a Japanese PS3 repaired in Japan... I guess all you can do is call them and give it a try?

In my case there was a sheet included with the instruction manual that gave a web link and procedures to follow.. I registered the fault online and then posted it to them with a form describing the problem.

edit - as you are going to be paying for the repair anyway I don't see why they wouldn't fix it, maybe you don't even need to mention that it's an american machine? Have a look on the Playstation UK site for information.
