xrgb 2plus or other such upscalers - recomendations?

I think this is ok for a new thread but if any of the admins feel the need to chuck it in with something like this then go right ahead.

I'm after a way to play some of my consoles on my pc monitor. after a bit of asking around (thanks yakumo, mattyd, oldgamingfart and others who have given advice in the past), the xrgb 2+ looks pretty good, but can anyone give me a bit more info on them and which hardware revision would be most appropriate?

I plan to have a wii and cube running on it for the moment with snes and 64 added whenever i get around to buying them. Now I know the different xrgb models accept different inputs and whatnot so any advice anyone has would be much appreciated.

the other thing i was wondering is what type of connection would be best for each console. i have a wii component cable and could get one for the cube but are they the best option? same with 64 and snes when i pick them up (not component, but which connection is the best?)

thanks in advance for any help

I think this thread may be what you're looking for:

I have a unit and have done some tests, but my weekend was exceptionally busy and didn't finish off my comparisons. I plan to write up them up for tomorrow, so watch that thread.

Looks pretty decent, especially considering the price. My only problem though is that it only seems to take component, and only room for one console as well. Still though, when you get around to testing let me know what it's like, it might be worth picking up. Otherwise though, I think I'll go for the xrgb-2+ and use component for the wii, d-terminal or whatever its called (it will give me picture as good as component will it not?) for the cube and then probably scart for the snes and ill work out something for the 64 (composite or can you get better?) when i get it.

EDIT: ah also fixed the link in the quote, original wasnt working

Can anyone tell me what sort of power supply the XRGB-2 uses? I might be buying one without it, so I need some sort of replacement.

xrgb's do not support Scart. They support RGB-21. It looks the same, but it's not.
          Kept you waiting, huh?

You can get an adapter though, as it's just the pin out that's different.

Or you can re-wire the port. Matey up there saying he's gonna run his SFC through Scart won't be unless he does either of the two.

ah sorry, did know that a european cable wouldnt work but i still thought the jp one was called scart. was just going to pick up a japanese cable if i could find one though i suppose an adapter might be easier

I've made a bunch of adapter cables and they work great, trust me it is a lot easier than messing with a piece of equipment costing over £100 and possibly getting a dodgy soldering job done on it.

The great thing about the adapter cable is that if you ever get rid of it, the new owner can use any European RGB SCART cable.

ah thanks gunrock. found a few potential issues with the xrgb so i may end up going with that after all. was just reading an ign review of the xrgb 2+ and apparently it doesnt support 480p. seriously?

also does anyone know how well these work on widescreen monitors. theres no way to display a picture in 4:3 just with the monitor is there? does this mean i will be playing stretched cube games?

This isn't exactly what you're looking for, because it only support Component input, but I recently purchased a HD BOX PRO, £30 + 9 delivery.

I'll be honest, it was crap for my PS3 (despite bragging about 1080p support), but it's very nice for Wii. Comparable to the VDigi VD-W2 VGA cable, but supporting both 480i and p, and upscaling to any VGA resolution. I did a blind test with my brother (who is no videophile or anything) which he preferred between the HD BOX PRO and VD-W2, and he said for former was much clearer (I guess because of the upscaling). Something to consider.

mm im actually thinking i might pick an hd box pro and a vdigi cable. that way the vdigi cable can be used for the wii and the hd box will still work with the cube being only 480i and all. I was thinking of getting an xselect-d4 but thats no good for the interlaced cube games and the odd interlaced wii game.

Still wondering if anyone has any info on 4:3 on a widescreen monitor as im fairly sure theres no way to avoid the monitor stretching the picture.

I forgot to mention, the HD BOX PRO has a button to adjust aspect ratio, regardless of output resolution. Very handy for stuff like Virtual Console games or Cube games.

I've not had much chance to test 480i, but I fired up RE3 on on the Cube and it looked as it should.

I've boxed up my Vdigi cable, and will probably sell it. The VDigi cable is excellent, but there's no point in myself keeping both.
