HELP!! installed ram and now PC not working!!

    Yes, Im PC-less!!!!

Right, i installed some new ram on my pc (re my other thread http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/showthread.php?t=90090) but disaster srtuck.

OK, my first attempt was a failure. I tried installing the two 1gig sticks and apparently i didnt push them in far enough. Tried booting up the pc but the tower was beeping at me.

Second attempt, put the ram in correctly this time, no beeping, pc making all the right noises, BUT nothings happening with the monitor. See thing is, the idiot that installed my graphx card, put it in the slot RIGHT next to the ram sticks. So its nearly impossible to access them. Needless to say, i think i might have slightly moved the graphx card a bit.

I'd try removing the card and reinstalling, maybe changing its slot (theres another 3) but im too scared to.

What should i do? Should I try putting the old 512 ram in? I'm really depressed now!! I'm on a mates pc at the moment but i really need to get back online!! So much for gettin ram..

    Somebody help!!

well happened to me turned out i had a faulty ram stick

try putting one in and see if it boots....and then if not take one out and try the other one

if still nothing try using the old ram

also make sure you have not nudged anything out of place like hard drive cables or power cables

How old is your pc? Maybe your PC can't handle the speeds of the ram or you can't handle more than 1GB. Just try having 1gb in first, if that doesn't work try putting your old ram in.

Ye i tried all the above.. except i never put the old ram in yet.

I'll try that now. And no im pretty sure i have the right ram. I did a fair bit if research beforehand. My pc is 3 years old. Damn this is gettin me down..

When i did it i was REALLY careful not to move anything.. but might've moved the graphx card like i said. Would this be why nothings happening with the monitor?

Just doesnt seem to be getting a signal from the pc...

A slight knock wouldn't dislodge the graphics card, to be sure, suggest you turn it all off and check it's pushed down firmly - if it isn't you wouldn't get a picture no - check the VGA lead coming out of it is connected properly, may have come loose when you moved the PC ?

try the graphics card, man! i'd also recommend putting the old 512 back in when you do this just to narrow down the possibilities. just keep an eye out for the little clip just to the right of the gfx card connector, which keeps the gfx card in place.

there's nothing to it. it's not like your first game of SF at an arcade against some big massive bloke who's about to show you why Dhalsim isn't a good idea just because he has long limbs

            *snaps out of it*

also makes sure you put the ram sticks the right way around as there is a little notch in them which makes them only go in one way

beeping normally means faulty ram stick usually, try them 1 at a time

That line really made my day

I'm gonna hazard a guess and assume it's an AGP gfx card, in which case there's nowhere else to put the card except that single AGP slot. Which means the idiot who installed the gfx card isn't actually an idiot - the motherboard manufacturer is, as they're the ones who decided to put the ram slots so close to the AGP slot

It's an nVidia Geforce 4 dude.

                    64mb.

Not sure of any other specs but thats all I remember. Would that be why it's in the slot it's in then?

No no, all graphics cards go in that slot. The problem is the ram slots are where they are. Graphics cards were always going to get longer as they added more bits onto them, pushing them nearer to the ram.

What I meant was whoever installed the graphics card had no choice but to stick it in that slot as it won't fit in any other slot on the motherboard.

Also tried one at a time dude. It was beepin before cos the sides hadnt clicked the first time. They're in properly now.

Hmm.. the towers makin all the right noises, as if it were turnin on normaly, but im gettin nothing on the monitor, and no sound either. So its no bootin up.

                          Maybe dodgy vga cable?

Turning off before shutting down is only an issue if you're inside Windows. Assuming your PC isn't booting into Windows, you won't have any problems at all.

If, freakily, it IS booting into Windows without showing anything onscreen (you'd know because the hard drive would be chugging away for ages), you could always just press the power button once (don't hold it) and that would make Windows shut down properly as though you'd gone to Start and chosen Shutdown yourself.

If it's just that the PC spins up the hard drives and you hear them make a few noises then nothing after that, then no, the PC isn't booting at all.

You've got to just get in there, though. You've already been in there already so you'll be fine!

                              AAHHHH!!

I put the old ram back in and it's working now..

                              Hmm, wtf? Dodgy ram?

If you're looking for new RAM, take a look at the wide range of memory we have available. With sizes and speeds available to suit every need and budget, you can be sure to find RAM to improve your build and ensure applications run quickly and smoothly.

Should I try putting em in again?

Maybe try one of the 1 gigs with 1 256??
