    PS3 via HDMI question

Got the PS3, happy man, got only Disgaea 3 JPN to play on it so maybe I'll take my time to...mhmm...play some unfinished Wii games. Or download some demos.

However, I have a question on the HDMI connection. At the first boot, the console detected an HDMI display and asked me if I wanted to output over it, said yes and then changed the audio config so that audio would be broadcasted over the optical cable straight to the AC3 decoder.
Turned off the console (and cut power from a multi socket...I don't like to have consoles on stand by all day long) and at the second boot the PS3 once again asked me if I wanted to go through HDMI and changed audio settings once again. Third boot exactly the same.

Do the PS3 always reset HDMI settings at every "cold" startup?

Now, I'm using a monitor with a single DVI port and a HDMI switch (both HDCP compatible) to have both PC and PS3 on it. When I switch from the PC to the PS3, the PC marks the monitor as disconnected and moves everything to the secondary monitor and I have to manually detect it once I'm finished with the PS3...so I think the same happens with the PS3, it stops to detect the monitor as the switch cuts all connections to go back to the PC.

Sounds like its more of a handshaking issue and each time it reacts that its a new connection so needs to reset and detect it. Normally it would just boot up and would never ask again unless you took the HDMI out of the panel and put back in again. You might want to boot up with your finger held down on the power and let it reset itself once to choose the settings and see if that helps but you might have to live with it everytime if its being flagged as a new connection.

      Just what I thought.
During late afternoon I've experimented a bit...I took the PS2 component cable and connected it to the PS3 AV port and turned on the system. System didn't ask about HDMI connection and didn't have to set again audio options.
      Weird.
Will try later on to see what will happen...maybe having the AV port occupied by a standard lead will prompt the PS3 to remember the audio options.

Could the HDMI switch be the problem? Have you tried it without it?

The HDMI switch has always been the main suspect, as the PC suffers of similar problems. However, rewiring that part of my setup will require some time and a lot of patience. As the problem isn't life-threatening, I'll leave it be until I change my monitor with something with a double DVI-D input or DVI and HDMI input; however, since the X360, once bought, will be connected to the HDMI switch anyway, I'll live with it.
